New York Times San Diego for Beer

If you’re reading this blog it’s not news to you that San Diego is known for beer, but it’s nice to get some national recognition.

In the recent The 45 Places to Go in 2012 list in the New York Times Travel section San Diego gets a mention at spot number fourteen, but not for our near perfect weather, sunny beaches or delicious Mexican food. Instead they point out what makes San Diego really great: our brewers and beer culture.

Even in times of tight budgets, finely crafted beer remains a relatively approachable luxury, and few American regions have more brewing momentum than San Diego County. Maybe it’s time, then, to think about building a beer safari in the land of sunshine, fish tacos and hopped-up American IPAs.

On the brewery side Karl Strauss, Stone Brewing Co. and Hess Brewing get shoutouts. On the retail/bar side our friends at Bottlecraft along with the Pizza Port Bottleshop get mentiioned with Hamilton’s Tavern, O’Brien’s Pub and Local Habit.

And no talk of San Diego beer would be complete without mentioning San Diego Beer Week.

It’s worth noting that San Diego is one of only four US cities to make the worldly list. I don’t know how many people follow the recommendations of the NY Times Travel section when planning their vacations, but I’d be willing to be beer tourism is still on the upswing in this fine town of ours.

San Diego Brewers Bring Home Awards Aplenty at 2011 GABF

Last year San Diego breweries brought home fifteen medals from the Great American Beer Festival in Denver. Saturday afternoon the awards were announced in 83 beer categories with San Diego breweries bringing home twenty medals. In addition to the individual beer categories six brewery awards are given out and San Diego breweries brought home two of those titles.

Pizza Port Carlsbad was named Large Brewpub and Large Brewpub Brewer of the Year for the third year in a row. Pizza Port Ocean Beach and brewer Yiga Miyashiro took home the award for Small Brewpub and Small Brewpub Brewer of the Year for the first time. Overall the three San Diego Pizza Port locations dominated, bringing in twelve of San Diego’s twenty medals (Pizza Port San Clemente took home one bronze medal).

Pizza Port Carlsbad alone brought home six medals, tied for second place for most medals with Firestone Walker (Rock Bottom also took six medals, but all Rock Bottom locations were entered together, not separate for each location as Pizza Port was). Pizza Port Carlsbad also tied for second place with Firestone Walker for most gold medals won with three. Sun King Brewing in Indianapolis took home the most gold medals (four) as well as most medals overall with eight.

California breweries took home the most medals with 51 total while Colorado came was second with 44. The state of Oregon was third with fifteen medals. Think about that for a moment, San Diego breweries alone came home with five more medals than the entire state of Oregon and San Diego accounted for nearly 40% of California’s medals.

Adams Avenue Beer Tasting at Adams Avenue Street Fair, Saturday Sept. 24th

The Adams Avenue Street Fair, which happens over two days in September every year along Adams Avenue in Normal Heights has long been one of the best street fairs and free music festivals around. In order to make things even better this year they’re adding a beer tasting area from Noon-6pm on Saturday, Sept 24th.

They’re not calling it a beer festival, but it’s a similar concept. $20 gets you in (far cheaper than most beer events of the kind) and 12 4oz tasters from fifteen breweries including Karl Strauss, Coronado, Manzanita, Stone, The Lost Abbey, Ballast Point and more. I’m told they’re selling a limited number of tickets, so things shouldn’t get too crowded and chances are good it will sell out before the day of the event.

The Adams Ave Street Fair always has good music, and now there will be good local beer as well. And if you still need more beer when you run out of taster tickets you can stop into Blind Lady Ale House, conveniently located in the heart of the festival for more.

More Local Beer Coming to Lindbergh Field

Yesterday the the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority Board approved ten new food and retail concession packages which include close to fifty outlets. Both of the approved food service concession packages include locations of interest to craft beer fans that often find themselves waiting for flights at the San Diego airport.

(I won’t pretend that I fully understand the way restaurants operate at the airport, but it’s my understanding that a restaurant (or any business) partners with a concessionaire, High Flying Foods and Host being the two involved here, which then operates the retail location inside the airport.)

Stone Brewing Co. has partnered up with High Flying Foods for a restaurant location with a bar in Terminal 2. As with Stone World Bistro and Gardens in Escondido and the planed Stone Brewing World Bistro and Gardens Liberty Station expect good food and quality beer. This Union Tribune article suggests that High Flying Foods will be using some produce from Stone Farms in their airport restaurants, which presumably includes the Stone restaurant.

One of the other new eateries at the airport that will be of interest to craft beer lovers is Craft Brews on 30th St a restaurant that will “promote the whole 30th Street experience in the airport” according to Jay Porter proprietor of 30th St restaurants The Linkery and El Take it Easy, and also one of the folks behind the future eatery at the airport. The focus will be to have great food and great craft beer while reminding visitors that 30th Street is one of the best stretches of road in the county for dining and craft beer. UPDATE: Jay Porter got in touch to let me know that the restaurant “Craft Brews on 30th St” that the Airport Authority approved is not the same restaurant that he was going to be involved with. When talking about eating or drinking at any airport, the cost is one of the first things that comes to mind, as it did in the comments on the Union Tribune article about the new restaurants. Greg Koch, Stone Brewing Co. CEO left a follow up comment that should appease those worried about exhorbitant costs, “The airport requirements are that the prices be no more than 10% above the pricing you’d find outside of the airport (and stadiums and such were disallowed as comparables).” So expect prices to be slightly higher, but still within reason.

According to the press release put out by the airport, the new eateries will be located throughout all terminals at the airport, including the Terminal 2 expansion set to open in 2013. Some of the new dining and retail outlets are expected to open as soon as December 1st, 2012.

Stone’s Koch also commented on the UT article that they would be the first stop after security in Terminal 2. “You’ll be able to relax with a fresh local craft beer while you watch your fellow travelers get patdowns, fumble with their luggage & plastic baggies full of ridiculous amounts of lotions / cosmetics, and take ten steps before turning back around in momentary panic as they realize they didn’t grab their cellphone off the conveyor,” Koch commented.

Karl Strauss works with a concession partner at Lindbergh Field with locations in both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. They don’t anticipate much changing with the new dining locations coming in.

International #IPADay is an effort to unite craft beer fans, both new and old, on the internet to raise a toast to India Pale Ales while conversing about beer. As the # in the name implies, this is an online organizational effort, asking people to blog, tweet, post pictures and video and more all based around the hashtag #IPADay making it easy for others to join the conversation. #IPADay is the idea of beer blogger The Beer Wench, and San Diego’s own Ryan Ross. But not all of #IPADay will take place online, many bars and restaurants will be putting special IPAs on tap, running discounts and specials and helping to celebrate IPAs IRL (in real life).

As expected, there won’t be any shortage of places to get a good IPA on Thursday in San Diego. Below is a list of all the #IPADay events going on in San Diego that I could find. If you know of any more please send me an email events@sandiegobeerblog.com

 

• Ballast Point Linda Vista/Homebrew Mart will have IPAs all day long, with a special Sculpin IPA with Lime, Ginger and Szechuan Peppercorn brewed just for the occasion. They’ll also have plenty of other treats including Sculpin IPA with Habanero, Sculpin IPA on Nitro, “Regular” Sculpin IPA, “Regular” Big Eye IPA, Big Eye IPA with Ginger and more.
• Karl Strauss will have IPA specials at all of their brewpub locations. $4 pints and $9 growler fills of Tower 10, Heavy Petti and Boardwalk Black Rye will be available all day. They’ll also have a cask at night with Tower 10 IPA dry hopped with  Ahtanum, Amarillo, Cascade, Chinook & Pacifica hops. Heavy Petti was brewed by Karl Strauss’s James Petti especially for #IPADay. It uses Cascade, Palisade, Moteuka, and Nelson Sauvin hops with some rolled oats in the mash for a floral and tropical smooth IPA.
• Bottlecraft in Little Italy will be doing 3 IPA flights with four tasters each. One single IPA, one Double IPA, and of Mikkeller’s Single Hop IPA series.
• KnB Wine Cellars in Del Cerro will have a number of IPAs on tap including Stone Double Dry Hopped Ruination, Great Divide Rumble Oak Aged IPA, Karl Strauss Heavy Petti and more.
• Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens will host a tweetup from 5-7pm with a special cask of Stone IPA and other rare IPAs on draft.
• Ritual Tavern will host the release of Butcher Brewing’s latest beer, Imperial Mucho Aloha Double Shaka.
• Tatiana Peavey of the beer blog Fugglybrew.com is hosting a craft beer pub crawl in North Park with specials at IPAs at each bar. Bars and restaurants include: The Linkery, True North, URBN, El Take it Easy, Toronado and Ritual Tavern.
• Phileas Foggs in Poway will have at least 10 IPA’s on tap and 15 others in bottles with live music from 7pm to 10pm. They’ll also be serving an IPA Beer Cheese Soup in a Sourdough Bread Bowl and IPA Mustard Chicken Wings.
• Blind Lady Ale House will have many IPAs and Double IPAs on draft including  and Firestone Walker Double Jack, Grand Teton Trout Hop, Firestone Walker Union Jack, Russian River Pliny the Elder, Coronado Black Ops, Hanger 24 Black Rye IPA more.

Pizza Port Carlsbad Poor Man’s IPA Earns Best in Show at 2011 San Diego International Beer Festival

The results are in from last weekend San Diego International Beer Festival competition and this year Pizza Port Carlsbad’s Poor Man’s IPA took home the gold medal for Imperial IPA’s as well as the best in show top honors. This marks the third year in a row that a beer from one of the four Pizza Port locations has been designated Best in Show. Last year’s Best in Show winner was Big Wednesday, a Belgian style IPA from Pizza Port Solana Beach. In 2009 Pizza Port Carlsbad received Best in Show for Good Grief Brown Ale (which recieved a Bronze this year in the English-Style Brown Ale category).

Plenty of other San Diego breweries took home medals this year. Stone Brewing Co., Tailgate Beer, Green Flash, Karl Strauss and AleSmith all walked away with a gold medal each. Pizza Port Ocean Beach took home two gold medals while Port Brewing/The Lost Abbey was awarded three gold medals (Shark Attack on the Port side and Veritas 008 and Red Poppy on the Lost Abbey side) as well as receiving the most overall medals out of any brewery with six total by my count.

Thursday June 2nd:

Today kick’s off Poway’s Phileas Foggs‘s Fogg-a-Palooza, a four day celebration of San Diego craft beer. The beer lineup they’ll have on throughout the weekend looks great (a few examples: Lost Abbey Ad-Lib and Karl Strauss 22nd Anniversary Vanilla Imperial Stout). In addition to all the great beer a few brewers will be stopping by throughout the weekend. Tonight it’s Ballast Point Brewing Co. Lead Brewer James Murray. Friday June 3rd:

Hamilton’s Tavern will be hosting Grand Teton Brewing Co. for Firkin Friday this week. They’ll have Sweet Grass APA in the firkin with plenty of other treats on tap. There should be something for everyone but a few that standout to me: Barrel Aged Tail Waggin Double White Ale and Who’s Brett Dark Sour, I haven’t had either of those but I’m definitely intrigued.

Saturday June 4th:

I have no idea where the Hamilton’s Tavern Mystery Bus will be going, but I’m sure there will be beer. There are two trips, at two hours each, both leaving from Hamilton’s Tavern. Sign ups are at the bar on a first come basis the day of. The first bus leaves at 1:30pm and the second at 4pm.

Sunday June 5th:

Stone is hosting Chef Celebration, a nine course beer and food pairing festival. Nine local chefs will serve food paired with 18 local beers (paired by Dr Bill) out in the Stone Brewing Co. World Bistro and Gardens. Proceeds help fund a scholarships to send local students to the Culinary Institute of America. Check out the full menu here and buy tickets here.

Monday June 6th:

As always Monday night means $3 local pint night at Toronado.

Tuesday June 7th:

Up in Carlsbad the Twenty/20 Grill at the Sheraton is doing a weekly series called Brewsday Tuesday. This week they’ll have Oceanside Ale Works on hand. No word on what they’ll have on tap but they’ll have some featured beer on happy hour special all night.

Wednesday June 8th:

Head on out to Main Tap Tavern in El Cajon where they’ll have Airdale Dark & Stormy on cask. They’ll also have some ice cream on hand if that’s your thing.

Thursday May 12th:

LOVELIKEBEER is putting on their first all Vegan Beer Dinner at Sea Rocket Bistro tonight from 6-10pm. Each food and 6oz beer pairing is $10 and 10% of the night’s sales go to the International Rescue Committee.

Friday May 13th:

Seems to be a quiet Friday in regards to beer. Blind Lady Ale House will be doing another Progressive Cask with lunch as they do most Fridays. They haven’t announced what the beer will be but it’s sure to be something good. And only $2 from 11:30am-2pm with the price going up by a buck per hour after that until it’s gone.

Saturday May 14th:

It’s going to be a busy Saturday. If you don’t  have tickets to the sold out Lost Abbey/ Port Brewing 5th Anniversary Party don’t fret, just head over to Karl Strauss’s main brewery in Pacific Beach for their 8th Annual Beach to Brewery festival. There will be some great local music and of course great beer on tap.

But that’s not all, 2nd Saturday at Hamilton’s Tavern this month is featuring Stone Brewing Co. The lineup looks pretty good with some barrel-aged and vintage Stone treats, many Stone collaborations and of course some free grub.

Sunday May 15th:

Just a few blocks from 30th Street in the heart of North Park during the North Park Festival of Arts is the Craft Beer Block. $25 in advance, or $30 at the door gets you ten tasters from over 20 breweries.

Monday May 16th:

Monday marks the start of American Craft Beer Week so there should be plenty of great beer events going on throughout the week.

Beer U: Inside the Craft Beer Industry at Stone Brewing Co. is sold out, but in celebration of ACBW Stone is dedicating all the taps in the Bistro to Southern California breweries so stop in and have something local.

Tuesday May 17th:

Ladies only: Chicks for Beer at The High Dive hosts The Lost Abbey. $25 in advance, or $30 at the door gets you five tasters and food pairings in addition to learning a bit about beer.

Wednesday May 18th:

Third Wednesday of the month means it’s Drink About time! Get on the (free) bus and head to some of the best beer bars in the city.

Stone is teaming up with a couple brewers from Japan to brew a Green Tea IPA as a benefit beer. Ex-Stone brewer Toshi Ishii (now of Ishii Brewing Co.) will be on hand with Bryan Baird of Baird Brewing Co. to brew it up with Stone’s Mitch Steele and company. As with most Stone collaborations they’ll be hanging out afterwards, from 4-6pm at the Bistro to chat with beer drinkers.

As if all that wasn’t enough, May 18th is officially Ballast Point Day here in San Diego and they’re heading to The High Dive to celebrate. They’ll have 20 BP beers on tap (including Barrel Aged Sea Monster Stout, Barrel Aged Tongue Buckler, and Barrel Aged Victory at Sea) as well as four cocktails made with Ballast Point spirits.

Thursday Mar 17th:

Plenty going on for St. Patrick’s Day. Blind Lady Ale House will be open for lunch and will have a ton of porters and stouts including six on nitrogen offered as a flight including Automatic Brewing Co.’s latest beer, Coffee Rain. Both Main Tap Tavern in El Cajon and O’Brien’s Pub will have casks of Alpine Beer Co.’s McIlhenney’s Irish Red. Pacific Beach Alehouse will have a cask of their Shipyard Stout. Small Bar, Hamilton’s Tavern and Toronado will all have Guinness keep the glass specials in addition to some nice sounding food specials.

Friday Mar 18th:

Matt Bryndilson, Brewmaster at  Firestone Walker will be at Hamilton’s Tavern from 5pm-6:30pm and then at Small Bar until 8pm. Hamilton’s will have Union Jack IPA on cask with a few other Firestone Walker beers on draft including their 14th Anniversary Ale and Velvet Merlin. Small Bar won’t have a cask but they’ll be doing some keep the glass specials.

Saturday Mar 19th:

Framboise de Amorosa is being released at Lost Abbey. 375ml bottles are $15 a piece with a limit of six per person. I’ve heard good things about this one, but never tried it myself. It’s not expected to make it into regular distribution so the brewery will be the only place to purchase it.

Hess Brewing Company is celebrating St Patrick’s day a bit late. They’ll have Fortuna Hiberniae, their all organic coffee stout on draft and nitrogen as well as all their other beers. They’ll have food from BBQ Republic and music from Family Wagon.

Sunday Mar 20th:

Another great Sunday Funday release at Stone Brewing Co. They’ll be filling growlers with 2007 Stone Imperial Russian Stout. Stone IRS ages well, this one should be delicious.

Monday Mar 21st:

In addition to the regular $3 beer nights at Toronado (locals only) and Eleven (all drafts) Stone is holding another beer class, Beer U: Craft Beer Around the World. Tickets are $25 and often sell out, so purchase in advance if you’re thinking about going.

Tuesday Mar 22nd:

Whether you’re a dedicated homebrewer or want to start, the monthly QUAFF meeting at Randy Jones BBQ in Mission Valley’s Hazard Center is the place to be Tuesday night.

Wednesday Mar 23rd:

San Diego Citybeat’s monthly Beer Club will be at La Bella Pizza in Chula Vista. They’ll have 8oz cask pours of Karl Strauss’s Blackball Belgian IPA for only $1 in addition to plenty of other great beers. You’ll need to be on their list to get the discounted prices, sign up here.

Thursday Mar 10th:

I don’t have many of the details on tonight’s “mini-Brewbies” Fest at Toronado, but they say they’ll have a few pink beers on tap and will be donating a significant portion of the money they make tonight to the Keep-a-Breast Foundation. There’s sure to be some great beer, and you’ll be supporting a great cause.

For those of you in the East County (of even if you’re not, it’s not that far of a drive) The Press Box Bar and Sports Lounge in Rancho San Diego/El Cajon is hosting Lightning Brewery. Head Brewer Jim Crute will be on hand with Lightning’s full lineup of beers. The $25 tickets include beer and food samples. If you’re set on going call ahead to reserve your spot. 619-713-6990

Friday Mar 11th:

Seems like it’s a slow Friday night beer-wise this week. Of course there’s always plenty of great beer around town, but Pizza Port Ocean Beach will be tapping a cask of While the Wife’s Away IPA at 5pm.

Saturday Mar 12th:

The American Homebrewers Association (AHA) is holding one of their homebrew get togethers (called the AHA Rally) at Stone Brewing Co. I attended an AHA Rally a few years back in Colorado and had a great time, I’m sure this one will be much larger with a lot more homebrew. The Stone Brewing World Bistro and Gardens sounds like the perfect setting. It’s free for AHA members or you can sign up at the door. Space is limited so RSVP (or get on the waiting list if it’s already full)

No Firkin Friday last night (at Hamilton’s Tavern anyway) means it must be Second Saturday. This month they’re hosting the Alpine Beer Co. They’ll have Duet and Token Imperial Porter with Oak and Vanilla Beans on cask and a whole slew of other Alpine beers on draft, including what is one of the last kegs of Exponential Hoppiness around. As with all Second Saturday’s, they’ll have complimentary food, this month an Irish feast with Mchilhenny Red Corned Beef and Cabbage, Token Porter Bread Pudding and more.

Pint night at both Toronado and Eleven with $3 drafts. Eleven offers all of their on-tap beers for $3 from open to close while Toronado offers locals for $3 from 6pm to close.

Tuesday Mar 15th:

Tipsy Crow is tapping a cask of Karl Strauss’s 22nd Anniversary Imperial Stout with Vanilla Beans. This is one of my favorite beers I’ve had on cask recently. There probably aren’t a whole lot of chances to get this on cask again. It’s good on draft, but great on cask.

This month’s installment of Chicks for Beer at The High Dive will feature Stone Brewing Co.’s Laura Ulrich (I wrote about Laura in the March issue of West Coaster). Ulrich, along with two other female brewers, brewed the first ever all female commercial collaboration beer earlier this year. Buy your tickets in advance and remember, this one is ladies only.

Wednesday Mar 16th:

The monthly DrinkAbout is happening at some of the Uptown bars. A free shuttle runs from 7pm-11pm between Hamilton’s Tavern, Station Tavern, Sea Rocket Bistro, Ritual Tavern, Blind Lady Ale House, Small Bar, Livewire and Toronado. There are sure to be plenty of specials but I’ve only heard of two so far. Sea Rocket will have flights from Manzanita Brewing Co. and Hamilton’s and Small Bar will have Brekle’s Brown, a new brown ale from Anchor Steam. This is the first time it will be on tap in San Diego and they’re doing a keep the glass special.

Up at Stone Brewing Co. they’re featuring Crime and Punishment keep the glass specials. Crime is Double Dry Hopped Lukcy Basartd Ale with chili peppers and Punishment is oak barrel aged Double
Bastard Ale with chili peppers. They glasses will be small (I can’t imagine wanting more than a taster of each) but you’ll get to take them home with you. They’ll also be filling growlers of Saison du BUFF, 2010 Double Bastard Ale with Chipotle Peppers, and Stone Imperial Russian Stout GK’s Mad Man Mix in the company store.
