Every Man's IPA, The Butcher, The Dandy, tiramisu

Butcher'd Tiramisu with The ButcherIt’s no secret that I’m a big fan of Societe Brewing Company. Ever since I met Travis [Smith] and Doug [Constantiner] I knew they’d be making great beer. I’ve slowly sampled my way through all of their available beers (well, except for the new Every Man’s IPA they released this week that is). They have a handful of IPAs — five now by my count, and another four more non-IPAs, three of which are Belgian style beers. I enjoy all of their beers, though I certainly have my favorites (I’m looking at you The Dandy) but it was The Butcher that I had been wanting to try for a while now, but it had alluded me until recently.

It’s been on tap quite a bit, I’ve had a few chances to try it, but The Butcher is a roughly 10% ABV Imperial Stout that I just couldn’t bring myself to order when it’s close to 90 degrees outside. But thankfully it was on the menu, paired with dessert, at The Grill at The Lodge at Torrey Pines beer dinner with Societe Brewing Company and Rough Draft Brewing Company. Dinner took place outside, not far from the coast so by the time dessert rolled around some fog was in the air and the temperature had dropped below 80, making The Butcher more desirable.

The beer was paired with Tiramisu, which had been soaked in The Butcher to add some beer flavor. The pairing wasn’t perfect in my opinion (though no one was complaining, me included). The dessert was sweet, I didn’t really get much flavor from the beer in the Tiramisu, which contrasted pretty drastically with the deliciously roasty beer.

And how big and roasty it is. With all the roastiness it’s reminiscent of coffee and dark chocolate. It’s full and rich but it’s 10% ABV doesn’t show.

With weather like this I’m not sure when I’ll choose to enjoy The Butcher again, but come cooler weather The Butcher will be hard to beat. And while I haven’t heard that they have any specific plans, I imagine some day they’ll put some of The Butcher in some sort of old spirits barrels and it will only get better with age.

Craft Brewers Conference and World Beer Cup in town Next Week

Brewers from around the world will be making their way to San Diego over the next few days to take part in the 2012 Craft Brewers Conference and World Beer Cup. The conference taking place at Mission Valley’s Town and Country Hotel and Convention Center is open to industry members only, but with so many brewers from all over the country and world in town there will be plenty of things going on at bars, restaurants and breweries that are open to the public.

I haven’t had time to make a list or guide to what’s happening, and unfortunately probably won’t have time before things get started next week. West Coaster has quite a few events listed on their Calendar. Check with your favorite craft beer spots, chances are pretty good they might have something special going on, new beers (look for the Green Flash / Founders collaboration Linchpin White IPA to make it’s debut at Green Flash on Tuesday, May 1st and elsewhere later in the week), rare beers, meet the brewer nights and more.

Karl Strauss brewed this year’s CBC Symposium beer, a 10% Double IPA named “San Diego Pale Ale” which will be given out to conference attendees. Chances are this beer will also show up at a few locations throughout town in the coming weeks.

Be sure to pick up the May issue of West Coaster which should hit the streets soon, it will have all sorts of info on the Craft Brewers Conference and World Beer Cup, including a look back at some of the 2010 WBC winners (the WBC takes place every other year) that are available locally.

300 Million Gallons of Beer?

brookston beer bulletin, Karla Peterson, super bowl beer, U-T San Diego

Super Bowl BeerIf you read about the super bowl in the U-T San Diego yesterday you might have come across the claim that Americans will drink more than 300 million gallons of beer on Super Bowl Sunday. While it’s certainly true that a lot of beer is consumed, do we really collectively drink 300 million gallons? Probably not.

A friend sent me this story by Karla Peterson and we both agreed that the number sounded far too high. After a few minutes of searching I ended up at this post by Jay Brooks at the Brookston Beer Bulletin where he analyzed the claim that 325.5 million gallons of beer are consumed on Super Bowl Sunday. The verdict: ” It doesn’t seem physically possible that Americans could consume that much, even if they were so inclined.” As Brooks points out, the US Census estimates there to be just shy of 313 million people in the US. If Peterson’s “more than 300 million gallons” claim were true, that would mean that every man, woman and child would have to drink a bit more than ten 12 oz beers, and while some people probably did drink ten beers yesterday, plenty didn’t.

Brooks goes on to take a closer look at the number, figuring that if you subtract out the kids, every adult would have to drink an estimated 15 12 oz beers to get up to that 325.5 million gallon mark (or more than 13.5 12 oz beers for our more than 300 million gallon claim).

So where did this number come from? It’s hard to say, Peterson throws out another figure, that Americans will eat an estimated 1.25 billion chicken wings on game day, a number which she attributes to the National Chicken Council, but she doesn’t provide a source for her beer claim, and as far as I can tell the NCC doesn’t make any claims about the amount of beer consumed.

Brooks traced the references for his 325.5 million number back to an alcohol “Industry Watchdog” group Alcohol Justice (formerly the Marin Institute). There’s the number, 325.5 million, in their 2010 Free The Bowl Fact Sheet [pdf link] with no reference to the source or any explanation of how it was calculated.

So while I won’t dispute that we drink a lot of beer on Super Bowl Sunday, the amount probably isn’t anywhere near the 300 million gallon mark.

I highly recommend Brooks’s post, it has more info and a bit more background on Alcohol Justice.

airdale brewing company, stone brewing co. winter storm

Things have been rather slow around here for the past month or two, though it should pick up rather quickly with the upcoming release of Russian River Brewing Company’s Pliny the Younger later this month (like last year I plan on updating a list of bars serving PtY, please send me an email if you hear what  bars are putting it on and when).

On a sad note West Coaster has a blog post about Airdale shutting down. Technically Airdale wasn’t a San Diego brewery, they contract brewed at Bayhawk, but they were a San Diego company. I always enjoyed their Dark and Stormy Imperial Stout, it’s sad to see them go.

Speaking of West Coaster, the February 2012 issue is out now, I have a column about the big beer companies trying to move in on the craft beer space. You can read it online here or better yet, pick it up at your favorite watering hole.

This Sunday is the Super Bowl which also mean’t it’s Stone Brewing Co.’s Winter Storm. Ton’s of great Stone beers on tap and in bottles including plenty of vintage releases. The Calm Before the Storm breakfast is sold out, so show up at 11am. Check the link for more details and the full tap/bottle list.

A Beer Lover’s Guide to New Year’s Eve in San Diego

New Year’s Eve and beer (well alcohol in general) seem to go hand in hand. As such, there are plenty of beer related New Year’s eve happenings in San Diego this upcoming Saturday night.

If staying at home is your thing

Starting Friday and going through 6pm Saturday Stone Brewing Co. will be releasing various beers from the past year at their Growler Fill Year in Review. Both the Stone Store in Escondido and South Park will be filling growler’s with limited and special release beers from the past year.

If going all out is your thing

Stone Brewing Co.’s New Years Eve Party at the Stone Brewing World Bistro and Gardens is the place to be. It’s not cheap (tickets will set you back $175) but it includes buffet dinner, live music, complimentary beer and a brewhouse dance party. Yes, you read that right, a brewhouse dance party.

If going to sleep early is your thing

Ring in the New Year with the Belgian’s at 3pm Pacific Time at Blind Lady Ale House. There will be a ton of great Belgian beer on tap of course. They’ll be open until 10pm if you decide to party a few hours into the (Belgian) New Year.

If you love Pizza Port but live in North Park

Head down to Toronado where starting at 11:30am and going through the night they’ll be filling all their taps with beers from all four Pizza Port locations. They say they’ll be posting the tap list to their website soon, but we expect there will be plenty of great beers no matter what they have.

If you want a cozy sit down dinner with great beer

Alpine Beer Co.’s Pub is the place to be. They’ll be serving a three course dinner with two beer (or wine) pairings for $35.95 which includes ‘Beeramisu’ Made with Captain Stout for dessert. Alpine Beer Co.’s pub is pretty small, so be prepared for it to possibly be a little crowded, but don’t let that deter you.

Didn’t find anything that sounded good here? Check out San Diego CityBeat’s comprehensive New Year’s Eve guide.

You may have noticed I haven’t been blogging nearly as much lately, San Diego Beer Week took it’s toll again this year, I think I went about a week without even thinking about beer let alone drinking it. Then I went down to San Felipe for Thanksgiving (where the above photo was taken).

I’ll slowly be getting back into the swing of things over the next month but posts will still be sporadic through the holiday’s as life and work get in the way of beer drinking and blogging. I hope to update the Events Calendar soon, there’s plenty of great stuff going on.

Chuck Silva of Green Flash Leading a Flight Tasting During SDBW 2010

Chuck Silva of Green Flash Leading a Flight Tasting During SDBW 2010

Yesterday I posted a roundup of what in my opinion are some of the best events happening during San Diego Beer Week. (And also posted a list of some of the best looking food and beer events as well).

But I wanted to highlight a series of events that Blind Lady Ale House did last year and will continue to do this year, Meet the Brewer Guided Flight Tastings. Throughout the week they’ll have a handful of different brewers in leading tastings through some of their beers. Last year I went to guided tastings at BLAH with Mark Jilg from Craftsman, Chuck Silva from Green Flash and Pat Mcilhenney of Alpine Beer Co. All were extremely educational, there’s no better way in my opinion to learn about a beer than to hear the brewer himself talk about it while tasting it, and affordable. Last year prices were around $25 per event. I haven’t seen prices this year, but I’d guess they will be similar. In order to keep things fun and make sure everyone can hear and ask questions BLAH limits the size of the events, which take place in the Hamm’s Room (West room at BLAH). So make sure to get there early if you’re interested in sitting through one of these guided tastings.

Blind Lady’s Meet the Brewer Guided Flight Tastings start tonight (technically SDBW Eve) and go throughout San Diego Beer Week. The full schedule (subject to change, so check with BLAH) is below.

Thursday, November 3rd 5pm with Tomme Arthur of Lost Abbey and Port Brewing Co.

Friday, November 4th 12:30-2:30pm with Jeff Bagby of Pizza Port Carlsbad

Sunday, November 6th 12:30-2:30pm with Mother Earth Brewing Co.

Wednesday, November 9th 5pm with Yiga Miyashiro of Pizza Port Ocean Beach

Thursday, November 10th with Chuck Silva of Green Flash

Friday, November 11th 12:30pm with Patrick Rue of The Bruery

san diego beer week beer for breakfast, san diego beer week food, sdbw pairing dinners

San Diego Beer Week 2011There are so many events happening for San Diego Beer Week I decided to make two posts on them, separating out the Beer and Food based events from those focused solely (or mostly) on the beer. See the other list of my SDBW event picks here.

Friday, Nov 4th:

Beer for Breakfast is always popular and there are a couple happening to kick off the first day of San Diego Beer Week. Up at Stone they’re doing their Rare Beer Breakfast, while down at Karl Strauss they’re doing a BYOB Brunch (Brew Your Own Beer). Participants will get brunch and beer as well as the chance to participate in a brew session with brewmaster Paul Segura. They’ll pick what type of beer they want to make and then get to come back a week later to taste it.

Don’t worry, it won’t be all beer for breakfast during SDBW, even those of you with day jobs can hit up some great pairing dinners. The Local Habit is hosting a few beer dinners throughout SDBW and kicking it off with a Stone Brewing Co. pairing dinner. Stone lead brewer Jeremy Moynier will be there to talk about the beer’s paired with Chef Nick Brune’s food.

Saturday, Nov 5th:

Shameless plug: me and the guys from LoveLikeBeer teamed up with Sea Rocket Bistro to put on Assembly a vegan beer dinner with Jolly Pumpkin. Ron Jeffries, brewer at Jolly Pumpkin is vegan so we thought they’d be the best brewery to work with. They’re shipping out some kegs that don’t make it out to San Diego too often to pair with Chef Chad White’s food. Tickets are nearly sold out so don’t delay if you plan on coming.

Sunday, Nov 6th:

There are quite a few beer and food options on Sunday. The Green Flash Smokeout at The Linkery starts at noon. Up at Stone they’re doing a six course beer and chocolate pairing. URGE Gastropub in Rancho Bernardo is hosting AleSmith and Peter Zien’s other project, CheeseSmith for a pairing event. I got a chance to try a few of Zien’s cheeses at the National Homebrewer’s Conference in June and they’re good.

If dinner is what you’re looking for don’t miss An Evening with (Ballast Point’s) Colby Chandler at O’Brien’s Pub. Colby will lead a tasting through his favorite San Diego Beer’s (both from Ballast Point and other breweries) and O’Brien’s Tyson Blake will be pairing food.

Monday, Nov 7th:

URGE Gastropub put on a Sierra Nevada beer dinner at few months back and it was such a hit they’re doing it again. They’ll have four course prix fixe menu to pair with some of Sierra Nevada’s beers. Check with URGE for the full menu.

Tuesday, Nov 8th:

Moonlight Brewing’s beers don’t often make it down to San Diego, but El Take it Easy has five of them. They’ll be serving half pours of beer paired with food for $9.

Behind the Brewery with MIHO Gastrotruck at Ballast Point’s Homebrew Mart are always fun dinner events. Laid back and casual MIHO brings some great food and Ballast Point pulls out all the stops to serve up some great beer.

Both Stephen Beaumont and “Dr” Bill Sysak are well known in the beer community for their ability to masterfully pair beer with food. So what better way to decide who the best is by letting them both pair a beer each course at a Master Pairings Dinner and then letting the diners decide who did better.

Wednesday, Nov 9th:

I’m a vegetarian, so I guess you could say I don’t quite “get” Phil’s BBQ, but my meat eating friends go crazy about the place. They’ll be bringing in a ton of Ballast Point’s specialty beers and spirits to their Point Loma restaurant. I’m not sure if it’s a set menu or not, but if you’re a fan of BBQ and beer this sounds like a good time.

Thursday, Nov 10th:

I went up to the new Sublime Alehouse in San Marcos for the first time and the food was good and beer was pleantiful, so I’m glad to see they’re embracing SDBW with a number of events, including this Hops and Nosh dinner with Green Flash.

Friday, Nov 11th:

Not looking to spend a ton of money on your SDBW dinner? KnB Wine Cellars has you covered with A Beer and [Grilled] Cheese pairing. They’ll have beer from Karl Strauss and different grilled cheese sandwiches to pair with for very reasonable prices. I’ve had a grilled cheese sandwich at KnB before, and this won’t be the kraft singles on white bread from your childhood.

Satuday, Nov 12th:

I ate at Terra (in their new location near 70th and El Cajon Blvd) recently and was impressed. Good food, good prices and generous portions. They’ve teamed up withBallast Point for a beer brunch that might limit your productivity for the rest of the day. Looking at the menu and beer list I’d say it’s worth it though.

I’ve never eaten at Eclipse Chocolat for any of their small plate meals, but I’ve head good things. They’ll be bringing in some beer to pair with a few different food options.

Sunday, Nov 13th:

The official end to San Diego Beer Week is the Beer Garden at The Lodge at Torrey Pines. Ten chefs will each pair their food with two different breweries all with a beautiful view from the cliffs above the Pacific Ocean. Check the event website for food info and the breweries that will be participating.

SDBWThe third annual San Diego Beer Week gets underway in just a couple of days, and I have to say, the amount of events is nearly overwhelming. As of this writing there are 391 events posted on the official site, with at least a handful of other events that I know of not posted to the site for one reason or another.

This list is meant as a mini-guide to help navigate through the events, it’s far from comprehensive and just serves to highlight some of the events that jumped out at me while looking through the full list. I’m calling this the “Beer Geek Guide” because it’s the events that I think will stand out to the hardcore beer geeks that are most interested in the beer. I’ll be posting another list, with some of the standout beer dinners later this week. [Here’s that list]

My friends/colleagues over at West Coaster also have a similar guide posted, there’s some overlap between events there and here, but not much. Be sure to check out their take on the things going on during SDBW as well.

As you can probably tell, the Events page here at San Diego Beer Blog isn’t being updated with San Diego Beer Week info, it’s just too much work to duplicate the info on the official site. So if you want to know all of the events going on, head on over to the SDBW events page.

One final note, as far as I know there isn’t an official smartphone app for SDBW, but there is an unofficial SDBW Planner web app. I’ve tested it out a bit and it seems to work well, you can browse events, add them to your schedule and if your Facebook or Twitter friends are using the app you can see which events they have added to their schedule. Now, on to the list!

Thursday, Nov 3rd:

SDBW doesn’t officially start until Friday, but Blind Lady Ale House and Tiger!Tiger! are getting a head start on the action. They’ll have Tomme Arthur of Port Brewing and the Lost Abbey at Blind Lady Ale House leading a flight tasting of six of his beers starting at 5pm.

Over at Tiger!Tiger! they’re showcasing beers from new LA brewery Golden Road. Golden Road was founded by Tony Yanow  (proprietor of the LA beer bar/restaurants Tony’s Darts Away and Mohawk Bend) and Meg Gill (formerly of Speakeasy and Oskar Blues) and the beers are brewed by Jon Carpenter (formerly of Dogfish Head). There’s a lot of potential for this new LA brewery, and as far as I can tell this is their first time in San Diego.

Friday, Nov 4th:

Hamilton’s Tavern kicks off SDBW with a solid lineup from Karl Strauss for Firkin Friday. They’ll have the GABF Bronze medal winning Two Tortugas Belgian Quad on draft as well as on cask with bourbon soaked oak in addition to other treats like Heavy Petti DIPA, Off the Rails and plenty of other Karl Strauss beers.

Down at Downtown Johnny Brown’s they’re doing their third annual Barrel Aged Night. Last year I was shocked with the number of great beers on tap and how relatively un-crowded it was. Check the event page for the beer list (which is still growing).

Saturday, Nov 5th:

The Brewery’s Guild Festival at Liberty Station might be the one don’t-miss-event of San Diego Beer Week. Nearly every San Diego brewery is in attendance with some of their best beers. There’s a VIP session with the really good stuff starting at 11am with General Admission from 1-5pm. Buy tickets in advance here.

Sunday, Nov 6th:

There will be a few chances to try Dogfish Head’s much sought after 120 Minute IPA during San Diego Beer Week but the first (that I know of) will be at Hamilton’s Tavern. (The others are at O’Brien’s Pub on Monday and Neighborhood on Tuesday). They’ll have other DFH beers as well.

Bison Brewing’s Organic Chocolate Stout is a long time favorite, and during SDBW they’ll be unveiling Bison Bourbon-Aged Chocolate Stout for the first time. Starting at 6pm at Bottlecraft they’ll have both the barrel aged and regular versions on draft to taste side by site. I’m told the event is being organized by a group of female beer bloggers from around the country and there will be some homemade treats to pair with the beer as well.

Monday, Nov 7th:

Blind Lady will be featuring some of the beers from Durango’s Ska Brewing Company (an old favorite of mine) as well as showing the movie Dance Craze, a documentary from 1981 about ska music in England. BLAH’s kitchen will be closed by MIHO Gastrotruck will be outside serving food.

Stone is hosting special SDBW edition of their Beer U series entitled, Beer U: Intro to San Diego Craft Beer which will feature beers from some of the newer San Diego breweries. Buy tickets in advance as the Beer U classes often sell out.

Tuesday, Nov 8th:

Wish you could get more Silva Stout? Now’s your chance, no Green Flash isn’t releasing a new batch of Silva Stout but they’re pulling some bottles out of the cellar for one night only. $45 tickets include a 4-pack of Silva Stout to take home, four barrel-aged beer tasters, commemorative glass and a food pairing.

Wednesday, Nov 9th:

At the National Homebrewer’s Conference in June I got to taste a a handful of beers all made with the exact same recipe and then split into different carboys and fermented with different yeast strains. This is a great way to see just how much the type of yeast determines the flavor of the beer. Lucky for you White Labs is doing the same thing and holding a demonstration at Sea Rocket Bistro. They’ll have three beers all with the exact same recipe fermented with three very different yeast strains. Neva Parker Head of Laboratory Operations will be on hand to discuss the variations in the beers. Hors d’oeuvres will be served throughout the evening.

Oskar Blues is known for being the first craft brewer to put their beer in cans. For whatever reason their beer doesn’t make it out here on draft too often, but at The Tipsy Crow they’ll have a handful of Oskar Blues beers, most of which don’t get canned at all. Many of them are variations on their regular line up, the one I’m most looking forward to being Barrel Aged 2010 Sour Cherry Ten Fidy.

Thursday, Nov 10th:

I haven’t yet had Four Calling Birds, the latest in The Bruery’s annual Twelve Days of Christmas series, but early reports are that it’s really good. Local Habit will be tapping a cask of it at 4:30pm and they’ll have other beers from The Bruery on tap as well.

I was tempted to not post this next event out of selfishness, I mean, Small Bar’s name is pretty literal and this event is already flying under the radar it seems, but journalistic integrity won out. Celbrated Ales is a local distributor that brings us some very awesome beers from some smaller and less well known breweries. They’ll be showcasing some beers at Small Bar including Gueuze Tilquin on draft (I believe Tilquin is the first new Gueuze blender to open in Belgium in the last fifteen years) along with bottles of Midnight Sun Treat, some barrel-aged offerings from Stillwater and more.

Friday, Nov 11th:

Barrel aged beer nights are always a ton of fun. Most of these a beers that can be aged, so bars typically stockpile some of the best for their showcase night. Just like Downtown Johnny Brown’s the previous Friday, Roll out the Barrels at O’Briens shouldn’t disappoint. They’ll have beers from local breweries and all over the country, aged in a variety of different types of barrels (nine different types as of this writing).

Blind Lady Ale House is doing a handful of “Meet the Brewer” guided flight tastings, where the brewer is on hand to guide a tasting of the beers. (And if you can’t be there when the brewer is on hand, you can always get the flight afterwards). On Friday at 12:30pm they’ll have Patrick Rue of The Bruery with six of beers, a few of which won’t show up around town too often. They’ll have Burly Gourd, Oude Tart, Loakal Red, Birra Basta, Snicklefritz and Four Calling Birds.

Saturday, Nov 12th:

Night of a Million Zillion Speedways at O’Briens might just be the most anticipated event during all of SDBW. Last year it was crowded, lines ran down there street and parking was scarce. Once they got through the initial rush things slowed down and many of the Alesmith Speedway Stout varieties were still available. This year the fun starts at 5pm and they’ll have twelve different varieties including Kopi Luwak Speedway, Morita and Chipotle Pepper Speedway, a Mole (the Mexican sauce, not the animal) variety and more.

Saison’s are one of my favorite styles, so I was excited to see Saison Saturday at Stone Brewing World Bistro and Gardens. There will be tons of different takes on the style with local Saison’s from the likes of Ballast Point and Lost Abbey as well as classics from Dupont and the always good newcomer Stillwater.

I’ll admit that until last year I wasn’t too familiar with Mad River’s beers. Sure I’d seen Jamaica Red and the Steelhead line of beers around, but didn’t know much about them. Last year I stumbled into The Linkery and met head brewer Dylan Schatz and sampled some of their lesser known beers. All were well made and creative beers that we don’t see too often down here. There were big barrel-aged beers along with lower ABV more classic styles. The Linkery will have some food pairings as well. More info.

Sunday, Nov 13th:

Stone throws great festivals. From their long running anniversary festival to the newer Sour Fest and Oakquinox, they’re well organized and have amazing beer lineups. This newcomer to their festival lineup is Pour it Black, featuring some of the best stouts, porters and Black IPAs available. If you’re planning on going buy tickets in advance, these things usually sell out.

Assembly – Vegan Beer Dinner with Jolly Pumpkin at Sea Rocket Bistro

AssemblyI’ve been busy lately which means blogging here hasn’t been happening as much as usual, but thankfully things seem to be slowing down for the next week or so leading into San Diego Beer Week. Look for an event round up, and a hopefully updated event calendar next week before SDBW gets underway.

And speaking of SDBW, I’ve teamed up with LoveLikeBeer to host an all vegan Jolly Pumpkin beer dinner at Sea Rocket Bistro. Chef Chad White is working on some amazing pairings for the four Jolly Pumpkin beers that will be featured that night.

Tickets are being sold in advance for the four course prix-fixe meal and it is expected to sell out. Last time I checked a couple days ago there were only a handful of tickets left, so if you’re interested in attending don’t wait to buy your tickets.

It’s not often you get to try four Jolly Pumpkin beers on draft side by side and from the ideas I’ve been hearing Chef Chad toss around the food menu should be spectacular as well.

In addition to the food and beer, limited edition prints (with Jolly Pumpkin beer mixed in with the ink!) will be available. They were created by local artist Josh Higgins who recently got appointed creative director for the Obama 2012 Presidential Campaign.

A portion of the proceeds will go to the local chapter of Engineers without Borders as well.

Click here for more info and be sure to buy a ticket soon if you plan on coming.
